Constructing the Perfect Thank You Note
The most essential piece to every interview process comes after the initial meeting: the thank you note. Failing to follow up with potential employers could leave the impression that you are not interested in the position or the people who took time out of their day to speak with you. If you’re stuck for ways to express your gratitude to your possible new bosses, we have some ideas!
When should I send a thank you note
?
A thank you note should be sent to your potential employer within 24 hours of your meeting. You’ll want to wait a few hours to digest what was discussed and find a way to add a personal touch to your letter. If you hand your interviewer a thank you note as you’re walking out of the interview room, you may leave the impression that you send the same standardized message to anyone. You’ll want to put a lot of thought into expressing your thanks.
Where should I start?
The first step to showing gratitude is exactly that! Show your appreciation right away by thanking your interviewer for taking the time out of their day to meet with you. They cleared their schedule to see you, so you want to acknowledge that!
Add some personality
Express your interest in the role and the company itself. Reference something you saw or heard in the meeting to suggest you were listening. Make it conversational! Add some personality to your thank you note to give your interviewer more insight into who you are behind the resume, and don’t forget to tie in your current skills and how you believe you and the company will be a perfect fit for each other.
How long should it be?
A thank you note should be short, concise and kept to the point but not so brief that it seems rushed or thoughtless. A few short paragraphs that highlight all your main points will be enough to show the employer how interested you are! Overall, it should be kept under a page.
How should I leave off?
You can end your note by mentioning you looking forward to next steps and that you will make yourself available if they have any follow up questions. Make sure you proofread before hitting send!
How should I send it?
It’s perfectly acceptable to send a thank you note via email, as this method ensures your note goes directly to the intended party. Snail mail adds a personalized touch, but there is room for error and delay, so consider email as your best bet to express your gratitude.
A thank you note can make or break your chances at landing the role you want. To avoid missing out on a position, follow these tips!
