“Juan, XYZ Fashion needs 20 people for the grand opening of a pop-up shop in Los Angeles… in 5 days. I’m assigning this case to you!!”
For a minute there, you might say that this sounds like an assignment for a 007 agent, right? Well, that is exactly what agency recruitment is for me. For the past 8 years, I have worked on the agency side of recruitment, and I can assure you, most of the time, it feels like we recruiters are in fact special agents, assigned with special tasks that if unsuccessful, a whole operation would fail.
Talk about pressure huh?!
You see, in order for a project to be successful, you need to have the right people in play. In other words, people are your greatest resource and your most valuable treasure. As we delve into a more automated future, the human factor is going to be more important than ever. We are already seeing retail stores close and be replaced with an uptick with pop-up shops and experiential marketing. Having actual human beings who can resolve an issue for you in the moment, answer your questions, or even throw a simple smile your way will never go out of style.
Now back to this grand opening in 5 days…
How will I get so many people who are out of work in such a short amount of time? Where will I find them if I am on the other side of the country?! Prior to Covid, I might have flown to Los Angeles and scoured the streets for people at the risk of people giving me suspicious looks. But, in a post Covid recruitment world, I would be less likely to do that.
***Cue Little Mermaid: “I want to be where the people are”***
I have to go where my target audience is. Depending on the brand of course, I would most likely to go to social media. Maybe the brand has an Instagram or a fan page where I can post a blurb and have people message me. Maybe I search LinkedIn for people who have in interest in the brand’s industry. Social media is an important tool in today’s world, and I think recruiters should take advantage of it. Think out- of-the-box and be creative. We are looking for PEOPLE who are interested and invested in a company or brand. You could pay someone to go to work every day to collect a paycheck, but wouldn’t you rather work with someone who is a fan and will show up every day excited to work?
At Pyramid Consulting Group, we believe in finding the person behind the paper. In my opinion, soft skills are much more important than how many Google certifications you may have. I would prefer having someone who is hungry to learn and is willing to be a hard worker, than someone who is an expert at v-look up, but disinterested. At the root of it all, we want to work with human beings who don’t make our daily lives harder than they may already be. Someone to ask us “How are you?” instead of “When are you getting that project to me?”
You can have the budget, you can have the best marketing in the world, you can even have the most beautiful and innovative product but if you don’t have the right people, your operation will fail. Next time you need the right people, consider hiring a special agent to do the job. They will make sure your mission is truly… ACCOMPLISHED.
