It is October! The leaves are changing, it is getting dark earlier, the temperature has finally started to cool down, and people are fully settled back into their pre-summer routine. During the summer months, it can be easy to feel like there is more to life than your job. Whether you get summer Fridays, you’re able to work outside, or you are counting down until your next beach day, the summer is just a more enjoyable time.
So, now that Autumn is here, it is possible that you are starting to feel like all you do is work. The days are busier, but they are also shorter. Feeling disconnected from your job and coworkers is normal, especially with much of the workforce still working remotely. Here are some tips from PCG on how to fall back in love with your job and stop that feeling of being disconnected.
1. Schedule time with coworkers
The hardest part of working from home can be the lack of interaction between you and your coworkers. Try scheduling a virtual coffee or lunch where you do not talk about work at all! Talk about apple picking or what your children will be for Halloween – that human connection will make all of the difference!
2. Propose a group activity
Maybe you onboarded remotely and do not have that same connection with your coworkers that some others do. Bring up an idea to your bosses about a virtual activity for your whole company, or team, to do together. It could be trivia, a virtual escape room, or just a nice “getting to know you chat.” Building those relationships will help to foster a better work environment for everyone!
3. Remember what you loved about your job in the first place
Hopefully, there was a point that you loved your job and you have just forgotten about it. Take the time to try to remind yourself why you accepted this position in the first place. Were the values aligned with yours? Did you find the work fun or meaningful? Find that reason and focus on it! Once you remember what that reason was, you will start to feel it again.
4. Learn or try something new
Sometimes part of the reason we slip into slumps at work is because we get stuck doing the same tasks every day. Why not try to do some research and find a new strategy or idea that your company has not found yet? Not only will this look good, but you will have something new and exciting to discover and maybe a new project to lead!
5. Become a mentor
If you have been in your position for a while, it may seem like you have tried all of our above suggestions and they just are not working. Try mentoring! There was a time when you were new in your company or even your career and you may have loved to have someone take you under their wing. Why not try to be that for someone else? Reach out to a new employee and see if they’d be interested in shadowing you. Teaching them may just spark something in you!
Now, what happens if you do all of this, and you do not fall back in love with your job? That is where PCG comes in! We are here working with people every day to change their lives and find jobs that they love. Contact us and let us help you find your next move.
