When approaching a challenge you have little experience with, you might be prone to a bit of stress. How can you not, when your responsibilities are testing you in ways you’re not used to? We’ve come up with a guide to help get you on your feet with a challenging experience. Using your experiences, asking questions, and staying calm will help you make the best of any challenges you might face.
Use your experiences to your advantage
So, you might have experience in a customer service job, like a Sales Associate role. You might be faced with tasks you aren’t entirely familiar with in, say, an Administrative Assistant position. Don’t worry, you can use your friendly attitude to your advantage when answering dozens of phone calls in a short period of time, just as you would when ringing up several customers in a row at your previous job. You’ll be surprised to find how many basic skills are transferable in different roles!
If applicable, ask questions
There might not always be another person around to ask questions. However, if someone is nearby and is knowledgeable on the subject, ask away! Not only will asking for clarification help you with the task at hand, it will show initiative and desire to learn. (Especially if you’re asking a superior). Likewise, once you’re equipped with the appropriate information you need in this challenge, you’ll be able to utilize it and build on it the next time you face another challenging task.
Stay calm!
Odds are, you were chosen for your job for a reason. Even if you’re in an entry-level position, you’re probably going to gain more experience as you go. Staying calm might be difficult at first, but you’ll find it can propel your career. Moreover, your demeanor in stressful situations will likely be taken note of by your supervisors. If your supervisor sees you calmly and coolly handling a new task, they will probably give you more responsibilities going forward!
