Career fairs are great tools to utilize whether you are a recent college grad or someone who is seeking a new position. If you’re unsure where to start, check out local college websites or social media for updates on job fairs or alumni events. Show up confident and stand out among the crowd with these tips:
Dress for the part
At career fairs, there are plenty of companies looking for potential candidates, and the one you are most interested in working for could be in attendance! Make a great first impression
by wearing your most professional attire.
Know what to bring and prepare your career pitch
Bring copies of your resume to hand out to employers. If there isn’t a position available currently, there may be in the future. With hundreds of other candidates in attendance, you may feel pressure when standing in front of a potential manager. By preparing a pitch that presents who you are, your skills and the kind of job you are seeking, you will be able to avoid stuttering or appearing uncertain.
Leave a lasting impression
“The best way to leave a lasting impression is to focus on your presentation. Presentation says a lot about someone; it gives us a good idea of whether or not we’d feel comfortable taking them on as a candidate and sending them out on interviews. Taking the initiative to approach a recruiter is something that really makes a candidate stand out,” said Melissa Castellanos, Senior Recruiter.
Be prepared to answer questions about yourself
Just like you would prior to an interview, do your research about the career fair and the companies that will be present. By knowing which brands you are looking to meet, you can prepare yourself for the questions they may ask, including what you know about the company or why you want to work for them. Practicing your answers in the mirror or with a friend will help you respond confidently.
