“So, tell me a little bit about yourself!” This phrase, typically heard in the interview room, can certainly be a startling one if you’re not mentally prepared to provide a well thought out answer. However, with the right preparation, you can ace this question with a spectacular answer that will help to make a good first impression. Here are a few tips for perfecting your elevator pitch:
Be Clear and Concise:
It may stand for itself, but making sure your interview elevator pitch is clear and to the point is an essential part of ensuring that it makes a lasting impression. Ensure that you are clear about your points and express exactly what you are looking for a new job opportunity and what the interviewer should know about you as an employee. Be clear on your accomplishments, education, and relevant training (they are things you should be proud of!) and state your exact goals and timeline points of which made you successful in your prior roles.
Quality, Not Quantity:
In an effort to highly your truly impressive skills, be sure to include your more impressive and relevant skills into your elevator pitch; things and aspects that you’re truly proud of and related directly to the skills required for the job you’re interviewing for. A recent article from Inc. suggests that it is most likely more important to highlight transferable skills from prior experiences and jobs, rather than listing positions. Be sure to highlight your most impressive special skills and personality in under 2 minutes.
Practice Makes Perfect:
Before you go into your interview, try rehearsing your elevator speech to yourself. Whether you stand in front of the bathroom mirror or repeat it to yourself just before you step interview, you’ll feel much more comfortable and prepared when it comes time to speak on behalf of yourself!
