With only six seconds to pass a scan, a candidate’s resume needs to stand out from the get-go. Keep potential hiring managers interested in you by including the most important details about who you are, what you do and your capabilities in the workplace. Including outdated or common information could keep you from landing an interview. Follow these tips from our recruiters and management to ensure your resume is in tip-top shape:
What is some common information you see listed on a resume that could be considered outdated or irrelevant?
“Microsoft Office. At this time and age, it should be a given that we are all comfortable working with it. Ditch filler words such as ‘Results-oriented manager’ or ‘Forward thinking contributor’ – all of those skills should be proven in your bullet points. If you reached 95% approval rating on a customer portal your company uses, then include that rather than saying ‘proven skills in customer service.’ Ditch any ancient jobs from several years ago, especially during college.” – Yara Diab, Associate Recruiter
What should a candidate include to ensure their resume looks stellar?
“The best thing a candidate can add to their resume is clear and concise examples or statistical information if it applies to the role they are working on!”- Krista Ballante, Retail Recruiter
What would stand out to you on a resume that would make you want to call a candidate?
“Your resume is a professional outline of your experience. Bullets should explain accomplishments and successes. They should consist of personal examples of what you have done in the role. Overall, a resume should be succinct, but not too brief.” – Laura Menezes, Account Director
What are some formatting tips that a candidate should follow?
“Bullet information in the order of importance of the position. Be thoughtful: it paints the correct picture of the role and responsibilities you held.” – Erika Mendez, Senior Vice President
