Maintaining strong communication is essential, not only in the workplace but in general face-to-face and social interactions, whether in a one-on-one situation or in a group setting. However, it can be argued that practicing strong communication is one of the keys to success in the growth and development of businesses and companies. To ensure that your coordination is strong among your team, here are a few tips to keep in mind when communicating amongst your colleagues:
Ask Questions
If you have questions about a task or assignment, ask! A key to developing strong communication is knowing that both parties involved in the interaction have as much information as possible. If you’re confused or need a little more of an explanation, ask the right questions. This will not only save you time and energy communication back and forth, but will ensure that your project, event, or other task is completed quickly and efficiently – the first time! Remember – there are no stupid questions!
Write It Down
“A best practice that I love is to have everything (and I mean everything!) written down before moving forward with a task or assignment,” said Haley Tanella, a member of our marketing department. “That way I can really ensure that I have all of the information I need, not only for my reference later on, but to organize for other tasks and assignments throughout my day.”
Whether it’s keeping track of meetings on your calendar, having requests sent through email, or jotting down notes during a big company presentation, maintaining information in written form will not only allow you to retain information more easily, but can also act as a reference tool in the future – cutting out the need to connect continuously one-on-one in the future.
Be Receptive and Responsive
In an effort to show group collaboration, be responsive to coworkers and colleagues during meetings or even in passing conversation. This receptiveness will show mutual understanding and respect. Create a receptive office atmosphere where ideas are not just accepted, but encouraged. Ensure that despite the content of the conversation, meeting, or interaction that all communication is perceived in a respectful manner.
Show Appreciation and Acknowledgement
Everyone likes to be appreciated for their ideas – so, show that! Displaying acts of appreciation and acknowledgment of other’s ideas is a great way to maintain strong communication. Always to thank listeners for their time and practice simple courtesy.
