Communication is key. We’ve all heard the phrase before, and we’re certainly always trying to improve it. The question then becomes, how? Your communication with your boss, colleagues, and employees can benefit from these simple to follow steps.
Listen
Listening while someone is speaking is not only courteous, it’s also helpful for back and forth communication. This may seem obvious, but it’s probably the most important aspect of communicating. Listening will give you instructions, feedback, and questions on important projects. Moreover, you’ll be more inclined to remember key points when you listen. What makes a good listener? Nodding your head and maintaining eye contact are two efficient ways to show someone you’re listening. Letting people know you’re engaged shows you’re open to communicating, regardless of the topic.
Repeat
Sometimes, especially in a fast-paced environment, important details get lost by the wayside. Even if you’re listening intently and taking notes, it’s normal that you might overlook a step. You should remember that asking to repeat something is a key to communication. Not only will you fill in any gaps in your info, you’ll also show your colleagues how focused you are. Your commitment to communication will prove to others that you’re a key team player. On the other hand, if you’re someone giving instruction, it’s not a bad idea to repeat your key points at the end of the conversation so you’re sure your employees know what to do next.
Ask
Asking questions is really important when communicating at work. Your colleagues may be on a completely different page than you are. This is normal and bound to happen at some point. Luckily, your open communication can fix this. In one example, your employees might believe their priority lies in a task you’d rather they handle at the end of the day. Ask for their progress and opinions, you and your employees will both feel more in sync. If everyone went around assuming one thing or another at work, the office would become much more confusing and difficult to navigate. Furthermore, asking for clarity can be handled through a quick email or in a mid-day review meeting- depending on the topic.
