As the midway mark of August quickly approaches, you may have realized that you have hit a “summer slump” in terms of organization at work. Your desk may be cluttered with paper mugs that have gone unused for weeks, your inbox may be flooded with spam emails, and your computer desktop may be covered in a slew of unorganized PDF files and Word documents. However, this point in the summer is the perfect time to get organized and rid your workspace of unnecessary clutter. Here are some of our favorite tips for re-organizing at work:
Clean and clear your physical workspace
Cleaning your desk or workspace shouldn’t be restricted to your office’s designated spring cleaning sessions! Organize your desk by recycling old unused papers or empty plastic water bottles, disinfect your desk thoroughly, return any unused mugs or cups to your office kitchen (and wash them!), and straighten up your computer, phone, and keyboard. At PCG, our team practices a Clean Desk Policy to improve overall office productivity and organization. Try implementing a standard cleaning policy in your office – you and your co-workers will feel better with a neat and organized work environment!
Organize your inbox
We’ve all been there – going through the motions and ignoring the (what feels like) 11,000 emails in your inbox. Whether they’re spam or requests from your co-workers that you’ve responded to months prior, your inbox can quickly flood with emails; important and unimportant content alike. This summer, take the opportunity to sift through your inbox and organize your messages. Hit the “delete” button on spam messages and organize emails of importance by separating them into folders to assist you in keeping critical information easily accessible.
Declutter your desktop
You may have found that your computer’s desktop has become a place for all of your important documents to live. And while it’s easy to just save documents and files to your desktop, try to really take the time to ensure your files are organized in folders on that desktop. And if your desktop is currently a little disorganized, take a morning or afternoon of your workday to manage folders, documents, or photos on your desk.
