As students begin to head back to campus for the fall semester, not only will they begin to prepare for classes, but they’ll be on the lookout for new and exciting internship opportunities to add to their resumes. Finding the perfect internship can not only add some experience to your resume but can also help you to determine the type of career you’d like to pursue post-graduation. Take the right approach to find the perfect internship for you this year:
Construct Your Resume and Cover Letter
If you don’t have one already, work on creating a resume that properly showcases your skillset and prior relevant industry experience. Ensure that your resume is industry relevant and clear about your prior experience. Fix and grammar or spelling mistakes and organize your previous positions and any leadership experience, volunteering, and relevant skills – such as computer skills, software expertise, and certifications.
Network
It is okay to network with friends, family, family friends, colleagues, school contacts or prior work connections to help you find an awesome internship – it’s actually encouraged! Using your contacts as a way to gain insight into internships is a great way to get your resume to the right hiring managers. Also, consider attending industry events, job fairs, or conferences to learn about industry trends and companies hiring in your desired industry. The more people you’re able to connect with (and pass your resume along to) the better!
Use your College Career Center to Your Advantage
Many colleges have extensive and dedicated teams of counselors at their university’s campus career center. Not only are these centers and teams a great resource for finding a job while you prepare for graduation, but they can be an excellent way to better understand the internship market in your field of study. Find out where on campus your school’s career center is located and find out how you can schedule a meeting with a career counselor.
Be flexible and Ready to Learn!
Internships are a great stepping stone to gaining relevant industry experience – especially as a college student. While you may be on the lookout for your “dream internship”, taking on opportunities that may not fit your perfect job descriptions could still offer great learning experiences. Just remember to keep flexibility in mind when taking on internships opportunities and be prepared to learn about an industry you’d never think you’d ever work in!
