Similar to many of my fellow co-workers, I sustain a pretty regular commute routine on a daily basis to get from my home in Connecticut to our offices located in the heart of Midtown NYC. When I first started taking the train into the city, I was afraid that the almost 2-hour commute would be daunting, boring, and downright exhausting. However, after my first few trips on the train, I came to realize that the time commuting could be used to kick start my day in the best way possible. Here are my favorite ways to get one foot in the right direction while commuting:
Plan out your day:
I love to carry my planner around with me wherever I go – I tend to keep it in my purse! This allows me to check frequently on meetings, upcoming company events, or other tasks that I need to complete. Take the time that you have on your commute to look at your planner to see what you will need to accomplish that day. Not only will this help keep you on task during the day, but you’ll be ready to go as soon as you walk into the office.
Read a chapter (or two) of your favorite book:
The benefits of reading are numerous – it stimulates your brain, makes you think creatively and will help get you into the right mindset for the rest of the day. Take the opportunity during your train commute to pick up that book you’ve been meaning to try or catch up on a classic favorite that has gone unread on your Kindle. You’ll be shocked how much you’ll read on your way to work!
Listen to a podcast:
I am a huge advocate of podcasts! With so many different options to choose from, there really are podcasts for everyone! For music lovers, sports aficionados, news-seekers, tech fans, you’ll be sure to find one that will spark your interest during the entirety of your commuting trip. Take the opportunity to learn something new or gain a bit of knowledge on a topic that sparks your interest – you’ll be happy you did!
Just relax:
If anything, take the opportunity to relax during your commute before you head into the office. If your commute is anything like most of those commuting to NYC from the tristate area, that means it starts early and can be long. Take the opportunity to listen to your favorite music, close your eyes, and just relax out before stepping foot on the job. Your body and mind will thank you!
