Balancing work and life outside of the office can be very challenging. However, the option of working a flexible schedule to maintain a healthier life balance has become increasingly more popular over the past few years.
The Department of Labor defines a flexible work schedule as, “An alternative to the traditional 9 to 5, 40-hour work week. It allows employees to vary their arrival and departure times.” A ‘flex’ schedule intends to meet the needs of both the employee and employer in a way that benefits both sides of the party.
There are many advantages of working a flexible schedule. One of these is having a better ability to meet family needs, personal obligations, and life responsibilities more conveniently. Whether you are a full-time parent and employee or working multiple jobs, flexible schedules can help you accomplish everything on your to-do list by being accustomed to your needs.
Another advantage of a flex schedule is that it can reduce employee burnout due to overload. Working a compressed week or fewer hours a day gives an employee the opportunity to take necessary work breaks when needed. This allows for them to better focus their energies while on the clock.
At PCG, we understand that a flexible schedule is sometimes needed to find a balance in work and life. Our Senior Director of Strategic Partnerships, Ashlie, has been working a flex schedule for the last four years and gave us her best advice on how to make it work to your advantage. She said, “Work your day and don’t let your day work you. Strategically plan out the tasks that you can do best in-office versus the tasks that can be done when working from home. For those work-from-home days, plan your schedule and create a clear to-do list of things you want to accomplish that day to minimize distractions and stay focused. When you do this, those at-home days can often lead to higher productivity than when you’re in the office because of the distractions that can occur there also.”
Consider talking to your supervisor about working a flex schedule if you feel yourself burning out at work or needing more flexibility in your daily routine. It could make all the difference in your career!
