The arrival of warm weather typically brings along with it an annual office memo for the summer dress code. Summer dress codes set office standards for what is and are not appropriate to wear at work when it gets hot out. These dress codes may vary depending on what industry or field you work in, but typically there is a general understanding of what you should or should not wear. In case your office does not provide a strict dress code for the summertime, here are some tips on how to keep your outfits office-appropriate this summer.
Avoid flip-flops. Although some open-toed shoes, such as a nice pair of sandals with a strap in the back, maybe okay to wear, flip-flops are definitely too casual for the workplace. Plus your coworkers don’t want to stare at your feet all day long, just as much as you don’t want to see theirs!
Modesty is key. No matter what season it is, appropriate clothing should always be worn in the office. Make sure anything you’re wearing is not too short and doesn’t show too much skin. This includes sheer materials, plunging necklines, skimpy clothing, or strange cut-outs.
Keep it neat. Although summer dress in the office tends to be more casual, always keep your outfits neat. Tuck in your shirt, remember to iron and keep yourself looking put-together.
Improvise! If you find yourself lacking a variety of appropriate summer outfits, there’s always a way to make some pieces work. PCG Senior Human Resources and Total Rewards Manager, Jenny, suggests “polishing off a summer dress with a cardigan to make it work-appropriate.”
Don’t be afraid to ask. HR departments are meant to uphold the standards of an office. If you are a man and curious if you can wear shorts, just simply ask your HR directors. The same goes for women’s dress code restrictions too!
When it comes to summer office-dress codes it is most important to be conscientious about it. Chances are if you think something may be too inappropriate to wear, it probably is. Although dress codes may change in the summer, office etiquette never does!
