We know the story all too well: the holidays are approaching, the weather is getting colder. Motivation at work can be hard to come by this time of year, especially as many of us would rather be at home, snuggled in a blanket watching our favorite holiday films. For most, the end of the year means getting down to the wire on any final business projects or hiring deadlines- so there’s no time for slacking. If you feel that your procrastination is getting the better of you- follow these steps to ensure your productivity doesn’t falter.
Rid Yourself of Distractions
You heard right. Get rid of that open Facebook tab- your notifications can wait. Social media is among the top sources of procrastination and it has no business interrupting your workday. If it’s absolutely necessary, wait until a lunch or bathroom break to check up on everything you’ve missed online. Likewise, if your chatty desk mate tries to strike up a conversation, politely decline and maybe suggest you two catch up during lunch or over drinks after work.
Make a To-Do List
Physically write down a list of everything- large or small- that needs to get done. Use OneNote (a favorite here at PCG) or even an old-fashioned planner or notebook to stay organized. If you’re able to see what’s in front of you, you’re more likely to stay on track. More importantly, you’re less likely to forget or continually put off a task if it’s staring you in the face.
Plan Out Your Time
Give yourself a timeline; it might even help to write your timeline down with your task list- (ex: “finish writing blog: 2 pm”). The key here though is to make sure you stick to your plan. If you’re lucky and find you have ample time, use it wisely. Keep the distractions at bay (because it’s harder to get back into your groove once you’ve broken the concentration).
