It’s time to get excited because it’s finally your first day of work at a new job! You’ve been eagerly awaiting this day for some time now. Before you go into your new office, here are a few things to keep in mind for your first day.
Introduce yourself
Say hi to your new desk mate, the administrative assistants at the door, and anyone else you might encounter when you first get into the office. Introducing yourself is important because, after all, first impressions matter! Having little introduction conversations will let you get a feel for the office culture. Likewise, your friendly introduction will go a long way and might open new doors of communication and collaboration in the future.
Listen
This is probably one of the most obvious but most vital things to do on your first day. You might have to speak with someone who more or less seems to ramble on, but you shouldn’t let your mind wander off. Listening (and listening well, at that) will not only benefit you in your ability to do your job, but it will also make a good impression. The more attentive you seem, the better.
Take notes
Taking notes goes hand in hand with listening. You could be the best listener in the world but that doesn’t make you exempt from forgetting little things from time to time. Take your favorite notebook with you on your first day to jot down anything and everything you might learn. This is also useful for when you inevitably need to be reminded of how to do something. First days are known to be full of information and you’re going to want to say ahead.
Ask questions
First days will likely present you with information that could confuse you down the road. If you’re not sure how your lunch breaks work, ask! If you’re uncertain about a specific job responsibility, ask! Ask for a reminder when you forget someone’s name because it’s totally acceptable to forget the first day! Your first day is made for learning a multitude of new things. Besides, the sooner you clarify your uncertainties, the sooner you’ll feel more confident in your role!
Don’t forget-
After your day is over, make sure to reach out to your recruiter! We want to know about your successes on the first day!
