You’re about to move to the other side of the country with your family or you’ve decided to part with your company for a new opportunity. Regardless of the reason, you’re starting to prepare for your last day of work. Here are a few things to keep in mind before you walk out the door at the end of the day.
Clean out your desk
This seems like a given, but it’s one of the most important last day tasks! Your desk could potentially have old confidential documents that need to be shredded or little mementos you’d like to keep going forward. If someone new will take your place after you leave, you’ll want to make sure it’s tidy. Besides, you don’t want to forget to take your favorite pen and notebook when you leave!
Check up with HR
Your Human Resources department is more than likely going to catch up with you on your last day. This can be for a number of reasons, but likely it’ll be to conduct an exit interview. During your exit interview, you’ll be able to divulge your favorite and least favorite aspects of the job or company. Your feedback is essential to improving on employee experience throughout the company!
Transfer any important info
If you have important files on your computer that need to be shared with your department, you should forward them along before wiping your computer. Likewise, if you are responsible for clients or customers, it’s important to let them know who they should contact upon your departure. This can be done in an email “out of the office” reply to save time.
Bid your farewells
It’s almost the end of the day! Make your rounds and let people know your appreciation before you go. Handwritten cards and little gifts are optional but of course, appreciated! This can be a great time to strengthen your network. Will a co-worker let you use them as a reference? What about vice-versa? Take some time to thank your team or anyone else who lent you a helping hand over the course of your employment.
