Searching for a new position can be daunting. Whether it’s your first job fresh out of college or you haven’t changed positions in 10 years, the process can be nerve-wracking. Though interviews are stressful, they are a great way to sell yourself and your capabilities to a recruiter or hiring manager. Many applicants are faced with challenges in their interview process and can become unsure of how to overcome their past experiences. Here are some suggestions for tackling those tribulations:
If you… |
then you should… |
...have changed jobs often or been in your position less than one year, |
only include what is relevant to the company, industry, or position you are applying for. Don't be afraid to include all of your experience if you can explain how it translates to your next role. |
…want an industry change, but you don't have a lot of experience in the industry you're looking to work in, |
convey that your experience from other industries is beneficial. Explain how you can bring fresh and innovative ideas to the new company. A 2-3 sentence professional summary on your resume can explain why you are looking to change and how you will get there. |
…are a new or recent college graduate, |
start with an internship and then work your way up, especially if you want to work in a large company. If starting out with an entry-level position is more your speed, communicate your goals and your ideal work environment to your recruiter. |
…were let go from your previous job, |
identify a positive spin for why you left. If you can, provide references or a recommendation letter from previous employers. |
